ANEP probes are used for detecting membrane potential changes; they fluorescence upon electrical potential changes through very rapid structural changes, so they are adapted to detect fast and transient potential changes in cells, although the fluorescence changes are usually small.
They are highly water soluble for microinjection. The fluorescence of Di-4-ANEPPS is less susceptible to cell and tissue types
